Mrs. Kenyatta has vowed to help poor Luos in Nyanza fight
HIV/AIDS.
This is after a report early this year indicated
Nyanza is the leading region in HIV/ AIDs prevalence in the country and has
highest numbers of new infections.
Speaking in Homa Bay County while
handing over a modern mobile clinic on Friday courtesy of her Beyond Zero Campaign, Margaret decried
the sorry state of health sector in Homa Bay saying something must be done to
boost the health sector because the County also leads in HIV/ AIDs prevalence.
She vowed to help end HIV/AIDs in Luo
Nyanza through her health initiatives as the First Lady.
“Reports show that HIV infection in
Homa Bay is the highest. I pledge to provide the requisite support to ensure
the well being of our brothers and sisters,” said Uhuru’s wife.
“We have to mitigate the HIV prevalence
rate in Luo Nyanza lest we lose the fight against the scourge,” she added.
However, Margaret challenged Luos to
desist from illicit sexual behaviours and abandon dead and sterile customs of
wife inheritance if the war has to be won.
“The high HIV rate in Nyanza has been
occasioned by bad customs and lifestyle of fishermen and fish mongers. However,
I want to urge them to change their attitude to help in achieving the goal,”
said the First Lady.
