Police Inspector General David kimaiyo has condemned Saturday morning’s attack meted on a public service bus en route to Nairobi from Mandera that resulted to 28 deaths.

Addressing the media at his office on Saturday, kimaiyo said that heavily armed bandits who attacked the bus fled to Kenya Somalia boarder and that he has deployed security officers to pursue them.

“We have information that the attackers fled to the boarder, but we are going to ensure they are brought to book. The bus had about 60 passengers among which the 28 were killed. We also have information that those killed were all Christians”, Kimaiyo said.

He also directed that the public transport in county should be escorted by security officers.
Kimaiyo has however hailed the ongoing operations in parts of the
country, especially in Mombasa, Lamu and kapedo seeking to ensure return of peace in these parts.

On Mombasa Kimaiyo however refuted claims of closure of any mosque as was alleged by Coastal leaders led by Mombasa Senator Omar Hassan on Friday, but noted that the mosques remain  scenes of crime pending investigations.

The IG added, “we have already nabbed over 400 people suspected to have been radicalizing youths in these mosques, who mostly target the youth and those unemployed”.

Kimaiyo however noted that he is ready to meet with leaders from Mombasa to ensure a collective effort in getting back the elusive peace in the coastal city.

On Isiolo killings where 10 people lost their lives a fortnight ago, but he says that officers have recovered the stolen livestock and are pursuing the bandits.

On the Marsabit attack that occurred early this week where 9 people were killed, kimaiyo says that they have been able to quell the insecurity.

The IG also condemned the stripping of women both in Mombasa and Nairobi, noting that they have arrested a good number of suspects who carried out the shameful acts, but called on the two women who were victims of the incidents to come forth and record a statement with the police.

Meanwhile contrary to the expectations of the Lamu residents of a waiver on the over four months of a dawn to dusk curfew, the IG has extended the curfew till December 24th noting that the county is not secure enough to waive the curfew

It said many workers have been told to stay at home or have lost their jobs, while markets have been forced to shut.

Earlier, a World Bank economist said the Ebola outbreak was expected to cost the region about $3-4bn (£1.9-2.5bn).

Ebola has infected about 14,000 people in West Africa, killing more than 5,000 – with about 2,800 deaths in Liberia.

Ana Revenga, a senior World Bank official, said even those living areas of Liberia that have not been hit by Ebola “are suffering the economic side effects of this terrible disease”.

“Relief efforts must focus not only on those directly affected by the virus, but also on those in the poorest communities for whom market access, mobility and food security continue to get worse,” she added.

The #MyDressMyChoice campaign started after a video showing a woman being stripped and publicly shamed for alleged “indecent” dressing went viral on social media. The video generated different reactions from online media users with majority of them coming out to condemn the act. From the conversations that ensued, the #MyDressMyChoice campaign began to highlight the right of women to dress as they please (individual rights) and to protest against the acts as seen in the viral video.
A lot of debate is still going on as to whether the campaign was or was not a success but the overwhelming feeling was that it was a success.
Here’s why we think it was.

1. Coverage

From online media, the #MyDressMyChoice campaign made its way to both local and international mainstream media with coverage from media houses such as KTN and K24.
International media house such as Aljazeera , the BBC and the Guardian were also not left behind with coverage of the online campaign and subsequent protest.

2. Discussions

The #MyDressMyChoice campaign aimed at sparking debate about women rights and gender based violence and it achieved this with discussions far and wide, both online and offline. There were even hashtags set out to derail the conversation such as #NudityIsNotMyChoice which ran parallel to the ongoing conversations.

3. Social Media statistics

They say numbers don’t lie and the social media statistics for the campaign showed a far reaching effect not only locally but across the globe. According to statistics by Spyce Magazine, though 75% of the tweets were generated from Kenya, the conversation spread to other countries with countries such as the USA offering 6% of the tweets, South Africa generating 2% and Kenya’s neighbors Uganda and Tanzania having 1% each.

4. Protest

A protest march set up by an online community happened on Monday the 17th of November to protest the stripping and public shaming and had numbers of over 500+ participants from all genders. There was even a section of the male participants who donned traditional male dress attire in support of the campaign.

5. Petition to the CJ

The protest ended with the submission of a memo to the Chief Justice and there were even local personalities who offered rewards to whoever would identify the perpetrators of the act.
Last but not leat, the issue made its way for debate in Kenya’s parliament and the hope is that proper legal measures shall be taken to offer justice  to the victims and steps taken to ensure it never happens again.

For the longest time this campaign was one sided, but now there is a strong voice coming out to tell people – “stop – there is something else here.”


Well, it is very important that from the onset I state my stand that I do not support violence against women in any form. I would use the term “barbaric” and any other term that sends the same meaning to describe the action of men who stripped this woman and several others before her of their dignity.

Nudity is not others’ choice

Allow me to quote the words of a fellow blogger whom I must say I don’t usually agree with but in this case I think he might indeed have appoint. On a post on twitter, Robert Alai says:

“We must have order in every society. Anyone arguing for a society of infinite freedom is daft. #NudityIsNotMyChoice.”

When we say “my dress, my choice” does it mean that we become unconcerned with what effect our mode of dressing would have on others?

Our very progressive constitutions has given as a lot of freedoms including those of expression and dressing is one of those ways that we express ourselves, that same constitution however has given limitations to those rights and freedoms with the overriding principle being “your rights end where mine begin.”

That essentially means you can enjoy your rights to the extent to which you start infringing on the rights of other people.

So how then do we reconcile this group who hold the school of thought that “their dress (including what might be considered nudity) is their choice” with the other group that says “stop, nudity is not my choice.”

Moral values

As a society that is bound within the borders of what is known as Kenya today, what does this speak of our moral values?

Are we ready to seek out our rights even if those same rights defy our moral fabric?

When we say “My Dress, My Choice” are we being alive to the old phrase that says “choices have consequences?” – That when we decide to act in a certain way then we should be ready to deal with the consequences of the choices we made without crying foul?

Again I am not trying to give people who live in the past an excuse, but rather opening up discussion on a bigger debate – the morality debate.

The morality debate is not just about miniskirts and the hemline, it is about everything we are willing to give latitude to as a society. The next thing we will be seeing are prostitutes asking for their trade to be legalized and with the latitude we are extending they will get that, then we will stop asking questions when we see underage girls in night clubs and before we know it corruption will so much be within our rights.

Appropriate dress code



The noise we are currently making on twitter and facebook will wane down but the question of dressing and morality will always be here with us for a long while.

Everyday in the office, at school and in church or other places of worship we see people dressed in a manner that we consider in appropriate and as I saw somebody put it on twitter “nobody made you (or me) the moral police to be the judge on how people should dress.”

However, as they say that dressing is one of the important ways through which we communicate it is important that we as a society decide on the appropriateness of the message we send through our dressing.

Your dress, your choice.

Choices have consequences.

Nudity is not some people’s choice.

This debate however doesn't need to be about the left and the right....there is a middle ground and that is where the issue we should be addressing is.

So as you exercise your rights to express yourself, remember the words I started with “We must have order in every society. Anyone arguing for a society of infinite freedom is daft.”

Addis Ababa, 9 November 2014 (WIC) - The tarmacking of the main road linking Kenya with Ethiopia is expected to be completed by end of next year, Kenyan official said.
 

Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani said the 505-kilometre Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale road was 60 per cent complete and that work was continuing well.
“Construction is ongoing. By the end of next year, we will have connected Addis Ababa to Nairobi on tarmac road, a thing that will change the economy of this place,” Mr Yattani, whose county is the largest and occupies 15 per cent of Kenya’s landmass, said.

The road is expected to cost $517 million (Sh46 billion) and is funded by the African Development Bank, the European Union and the Kenya Government.

The Governor said the road would ease travel to Nairobi, which used to take four days but has since been reduced to one. (http://www.awrambatimes.com)

To a generation of young Kenyans, Chris Kirubi is the quintessential self-made man: he is immensely wealthy and stylish, yet eschews the demeanour of a lady’s man stomping Kenya’s cocktail circuit with bevies of beauties in tow.

This picture-perfect perception is enhanced by Kirubi’s alter-ego, DJ CK, which he adopts on his Capital FM music blitz. Kirubi’s growing stature in business was affirmed recently when he was ranked by Forbes magazine as the 31st richest and most influential man in Africa.
Forbes said Kirubi struck it rich by buying small dilapidated residential and commercial real estates in Nairobi which he renovated and disposed off at a profit.
This, the magazine went on, transformed his fortunes and made Kirubi a business mogul whose estimated worth is $300 million (Sh2.4 billion).
Kirubi’s empire includes Nairobi’s International House, a 49 per stake in Haco Tiger Industries, as well as substantial stake at equity firm Centum and UAP Insurance – one of Kenya’s largest insurance companies – and construction firm Sandvik East Africa.
He also owns the DHL franchise in Kenya, and Capital FM, one of Kenya’s most popular radio stations.
After his Forbes listing, Kirubi subsequently told Drum magazine that he really did not know how much he was worth as numbers did not bother him; he was more concerned with what money can do.
Such philosophical contemplations contradict the 70-year-old bachelor who struts around the city in Italian designer suits with girls young enough to be his grandchildren.


“They know me personally,” Kirubi says of his tailors, which is what every Kenyan would say of their tailor.
While quite a few would say they know Kirubi personally, much fewer know how he made his money – beyond the official narrative that implies he picked cash with the ease of a farmer harvesting mango from a tree.
That may be so, only that Kenyans do not know on which specific tree he did the harvesting. What’s evident is that Kirubi’s big break came during his stint as manager with Kenya National Transport Company (Kenatco). This was a State parastatal established in the 1970s to offer logistical solutions to Kenya and the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Congo, Sudan, Burundi and Rwanda.
Kenatco was, however, transformed into a smuggling network by a group of politically-connected individuals in President Jomo Kenyatta’s inner circle.
The period between 1975 and 1976 provided a peak in smuggling after coffee market prices were spiked by frost that affected Brazil coffee. Smuggling hit fever-pitch as Kenyans jostled for coffee beans in the region – with Kenatco transport network becoming the centrepiece of the illegal operations.
Kirubi is alleged to have emerged from Kenatco a millionaire although the reason he attracted attention was not the alleged financial transformation but the foundering of the parastatal.
Kenatco was placed under receivership in February 1996, after it failed to service its loans and meet other financial obligations due to mismanagement. The genesis of its problems was a Sh22.4 million loan it was advanced by Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC), ironically also owned by the State.
The loan was meant buy new vehicles to revitalise Kenatco’s fleet but by June 2008 the debt had skyrocketed to Sh368 million, despite the struggling company having paid back Sh26.3 million. It was against this background that ICDC appointed a receiver manager to run the company.
Kenatco, which once held great promise, has now made history as the only State-owned corporation which has been under receivership for a record 16 years, exposing it to plunder and mismanagement.


At one point, Parliament was told of how some of its expensive Mercedes limousines were sold for a paltry Sh500. Kirubi was mentioned as one of the managers who had contributed to running down the company.
An outraged David Musila said in Parliament in June 2006: “Kirubi has been bragging how rich he is. He was responsible for the collapse of Kenatco but nothing happened to him. He was indeed given Uchumi to manage which [has now] faced similar problems.”
Interestingly, Kirubi was to become a major shareholder of ICDC when the Government released some of its shareholding, indirectly placing him at the helm of Kenatco, a company whose collapse he had earlier been accused of overseeing.
Uchumi Supermarket’s journey to the dogs followed a similar route. It was incorporated as a private company on December 17, 1975. Upon its incorporation, 51.5 percent of the stake went to the Government through 24.9 percent shareholding by Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation Investment (ICDCI), Kenya Wine Agencies Ltd (KWAL’s) 18.8 percent and ICDC’s 7.8 percent.
At the peak of its growth, Uchumi had 28 branches scattered across the country, employing more than 1,000 Kenyans. It became a public company in 1992 when it was listed at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.
When its fortunes dwindled despite the Government and the public injecting more revenue, Kirubi and 13 other senior employees of the supermarket were ultimately charged with defrauding the supermarket. They were charged before resident magistrate Stella Muketi on June 10, 2008.


They were accused of selling a piece of land on Aga Khan Walk in Nairobi belonging to Uchumi Supermarket at a paltry Sh147 million, although its true value was more than Sh400 million. They allegedly sold the land to Allgate Company.
After the sale, Uchumi supermarket was then forced to pay Sh1.7 million monthly rent to the new landlord. Kirubi was further accused of breaching public trust during his tenure at Uchumi as board chairman.
Uchumi supermarket has since been revived by a team led by Jonathan Ciano although Kirubi has been struggling to clear his name over the Uchumi saga.
Kirubi’s private enterprise, however, continues to flourish, as he told the Drum magazine.
Consider the ostentatious statement by the businessman: “If you are wondering in what ways Kirubi could possibly be a part of your life, they are many. Haco Tiger Industries give you cocoa butter in its many applicable glories. You write using Bic pen, use his bleach on your fabrics, rinse your clothes in his fabric softener before hanging them out to dry – using his pegs.
“You must have eaten his company’s rice, taken a mouthful of his oats, and shaved using his razors if you live in South Africa because, well, he is part of a company that is listed on the Jo’burg Stock Exchange that manufactures razors.”
One wishes Kirubi was as forthcoming about his journey to the top, and clarify whether the trail of failures in his public tour of duty were inadvertent mistakes that forged his business acumen, or deliberate sabotage calculated at lining the pockets of his Italian suits.

At least 15 people were killed on Sunday in ongoing clashes between two rival Kenyan Somali clans in northern Kenya near the Ethiopian border, local authorities have confirmed.
"The number of dead so far stands at 15 but the fighting is still on and we have not recovered all the bodies," Salaah Maalim of the Mandera County Government told Anadolu Agency by phone from the area of conflict.
 
"We expect it to rise," he said.
A militia belonging to one clan is said to have crossed into the Kenyan side of the border and mounted a dawn raid terrorizing the Rhamu town for more than four hours.
Residents say there was heavy mortar shelling and gunfight in the town, which is only a few meters from the Ethiopian border.
"For almost four hours there were shooting and explosions in our town," Aden Bulow, a 38-year-old resident of Rhamu, told AA by phone.
"A relative of mine was among the injured," he added.
Aden is now among hundreds of residents who had fled the town.
According to one resident, Faiza Zeyrun, his uncle who had just opened his shop for the day had been attacked by the marauding gunmen.
Kenya Red Cross Society said it is yet to confirm the death toll but its Secretary General said some of the injured have been airlifted to Mandera town hospital some 200 kilometers away.
"We are still assessing the situation and getting information as it comes from the ground and will issue a final death toll when all is calm," Abbas Gullet told AA.
Pasture, politics and county boundaries have fermented tension between the Garee and Degodia clans for decades, leading to on-again off-again fighting.
A meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta in June called for a ceasefire between the warring clans but hostilities continues  to flare up.

The trainer had not returned residence from where he teaches and hence the spouse used the opportunity to invite her lover. in the wee hours of the morning, he was once ambushed in the home and was once caught romping with the girl half of bare. They dragged him to the Police Station insisting not to depart except the police boss came. They pitched camp at the station until when the Ndhiwa Police Boss came and drove off with the suspect....

According to a probable cause affidavit the two had consensual sex at least twice.The sexual encounters began after a friend 'dared' the 13-year-old to contact McCormick.The report said the teen and a friend went over to the teacher's apartment to watch a movie. When the friend left, the boy remained behind and later had sex with the teacher in her bedroom, the affidavit states.



Police said the teacher and the teen sent each other 'snap chat' messages of each other's genitalia. They also exchanged explicit text messages.Police launched their investigation after a 12-year-old girl friend of the boy borrowed his cell phone and discovered one of the messages which showed the teacher in nothing but a towel, according to KFSM 5 News.

A Form Two student was arraigned in a Nyeri court on Thursday charged for defiling a three-year-old girl.

The 17 year old boy committed the crime on January 14, 2014 after luring the minor into a bush.

The court heard that the accused, who is an uncle to the girl, bought her cake and five sweets so that she keeps “the secret” but after three days, the pain was unbearable and the little girl told her grandmother.

The investigating officer, Paul Kibene, told the court that the girl's grandmother reported the matter to the police three days after the incident. She said that after examining the child, she discovered blood and bruises on her private parts and a doctor at the hospital confirmed that she had been defiled.

The case was postponed to September 1.

Police in Majengo, Kericho County, shot dead 5 suspected robbers on Thursday night and recovered various items believed to have been stolen from them.


Kericho OCPD, Kipkemoi Rop, has said that the 5 were part of a gang of seven who have been terrorising residents posing as taxi clients. They would ask to be taken to pick some items and later hijack the driver and steal from him.

On Thursday, they used their trick but too bad the police had laid an ambush and immediately arrested them.

They shot dead one of them while four others were lynched by members of the public. Two were lucky to escape and a manhunt for them has been launched.

Several electronic items and crude weapons were recovered at a house in Majengo Estate which is believed to be their hideout.

The bodies were moved to Kericho District Hospital mortuary.

Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga’s ex- adviser, Miguna Miguna, is on record saying his former boss is a political conman, who hoodwinks his masses with political rhetoric and theatrics which make his supporters poorer day after day.

Last year during the hotly contested election, Raila Odinga swindled an Indian company Sh 7 billion on the pretext that he will help them invest in the country when he becomes the Head of State.
Most opinion polls had put Raila Odinga ahead going into the elections and Essar Telcom was convinced that Raila will be the next President after the hotly contested March 4th elections.

Raila, who travelled to Britain and India to seal the deal, was offered Sh 3 billion by the Essar Telecommunication Company to campaign for CORD coalition.

With Raila in Government, Essar which runs Yu Mobile was hoping for a favourable and friendly understanding in the event Raila forms the next Government.

But all of Essar’s plans fell apart when President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the March 2013 elections. Therefore, Essar had no other option but to start scaling back from Kenya.
