The Teachers Service Commission has put in place stringent systems to stop sex predators in schools. Education Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi says teachers who make schoolgirls pregnant will be publicly named and shamed, on top of other disciplinary measures.

The public will be notified of the culprits and be warned against them. “We don’t want to have sex predators in our schools. It is very sad,” he said. Kaimenyi said the problem of schoolgirl pregnancies is threatening the quality of education in the country.

Cases of schoolgirls getting pregnant are on the rise with a high number of those responsible being teachers. Speaking to the press on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association conference in Mombasa, Kaimenyi asked the TSC to be zero-tolerant on any teacher who makes a child pregnant.

He said though the TSC is an independent commission, the ministry has had discussions with them and agreed to work towards putting a stop to such cases through severe punishment.

“We have agreed with them and they put that in place. They will come up with a system, including gazettement and notifying the public of those who impregnated our children,” said the CS.
