A 13-year-old boy from Lutaso village in Webuye West constituency is recuperating at his parents home after a traditional circumcision rite turned tragic.

The boy's manhood was accidentally partially chopped off on Tuesday by a traditional circumcisor during the ongoing Bukusu circumcision rites.

His parents said the rushed him to the Webuye District Hospital after the boy started bleeding profusely.

They said the same circumcisor successfully cut other boys and should not be blamed for the misfortune.

''We rushed him to the hospital after we realised that he had been cut wrongly. He was given medication and allowed to recover at home," his father said.

Webuye District Medical Supritendant Ceezar Bita said they suspected some circumcisors could be quacks.

"We made some repairs on his manhood before realeasing him," he said.

Ceezar said that the damage was not very intensive and the boy will recover soon.

Ceezar asked traditional circumcisors to perform the rite in a professional way.

He said it is the first case to be referred to the hospital for further surgery.

The Bukusu and Tachoni communities conduct circumcision rites between August and December every year.

This year, more than 6,000 boys have been lined up to undergo the cut in Bungoma and Tranzoia counties.
