Nokia is
no longer interested in manufacturing Smartphones. The company will
instead put all its focus on its other subsidiaries such as its Mapping
and Technologies business. Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri made that statement at a
recent Nokia Analyst meeting that was held in London.
Suri described the last few years as a period that Nokia went through
a difficult change but was glad that Nokia has achieved a period of
growth for the first time since 2011.
The company is also projecting
growth for all its three business units, namely; Mapping, Networks, and
Technologies.
Networks will be of much focus for the company and Nokia anticipates that the business unit to grow faster that the market.
The Networks segment of the market is currently dominated by Nokia,
Huawei and Ericsson. Competition in the Networks segment is expected to
intensify with the entry of small companies and IT firms.
On Mapping, Nokia recently made HERE Maps available on Android, a move that was seen by some as the Finnish company offering direct completion to Google Maps. Suri was, however, clear that Nokia will
not offer direct competition to Google, but rather use partners such as
Amazon and Microsoft to introduce the service to consumers. On its Technologies unit AKA patents and licensing business, Nokia plans
to earn more returns from its numerous patent licensing deals with
major Smartphone companies. It will be through the licensing deals that
the Nokia Brand will return to the consumer world.
