Fancy a poo-powered bus in Nairobi. It’s a reality in the UK. Today
they are boasting their first ever bus powered by bio-methane gas fuel
from human feces and food wastes.
Dubbed “Bio-Bus”, the bus hit the road by ferrying passengers between
Bristol Airport and the historic city of Bath. The 40-seater vehicle
can travel up to 186 miles on a single tank of gas, and engineers have
exuded confidence that this could be a gateway to sustainable and
renewable fuelling of public transport with fewer emissions than petrol
engines.
The gas, which is generated at Bristol sewage treatment works through
the treatment of sewage and food wastes, is run by a subsidiary of
Wessex Wate called GENeco. The company is also the first to inject gas
generated from human and food waste into UK’s national gas grid network.
Hailing the achievement, the General Manager of GENeco, Mohammed
Saddiq, said the bio-methane gas will not only provide a sustainable
fuel, but also reduce the country’s reliance on traditional fossil
fuels.
“Gas-powered vehicles have an important role to play in improving air
quality in UK cities, but the Bio-Bus goes further than that and is
actually powered by people living in the local area, including quite
possibly those on the bus itself,” Saddiq added.
The bio-methane gas the company is supplying is thought to power over 8,500 households as well as fuel the Bio-Bus.
