The Kenyan army said it repelled a machete attack on a military
barracks in the coastal town of Nyali near Mombasa on Sunday (November
2nd), killing six assailants, AFP reported.
About a dozen youths tried to break into the barracks at around 5:30
am, the Kenya Defence Forces said in a statement. Soldiers responded,
killing five of them, while a "sixth was pursued and shot dead in a
nearby forest", it said.
One soldier is being treated for injuries sustained when an attacker hacked him with a machete, the statement said.
The military said the attackers were armed with machetes only, but witnesses spoke of an intense exchange of fire.
The assailants were met with "fierce fire" even though the soldiers
were likely sleeping when the attack started and it was raining heavily,
said Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa.
"How on earth would a gang of criminals in their right minds want to raid an army barracks in an independent country," he said.
There was no immediate information about the identity of the attackers
