Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel's Sex Tape hit theaters this weekend, but the steamy previews, inescapable press, and star-studded cast appearances were all not enough to bring audiences to the theater.
The raunchy comedy made its debut in the disappointing No. 4 spot on the weekend box office chart. Playing in 3,062 theaters, Sex Tape brought in just $15 million stateside.
The haul is unfortunate for Sex Tape, which sent Diaz, 41, and Segel, 34, on an international media blitz that had them touting their story of a married couple whose sex tape gets shared with all of their friends and family on copious platforms worldwide.

It was beat out by Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue at No. 3 with $18 million, The Purge Anarchy at No. 2 with $28.37 million, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, spending its second week at No. 1 with $36 million.

With an estimated budget of $40 million, Sex Tape needs to see greater success at the international box office.
"We made a sweet, funny romantic comedy with stars that we love, but the title is a little confusing to some folks," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "There's definitely a sweetness to it, and we hope we end up being around for a long while. We also have a strong opportunity overseas."
