13 students from the Michael Wamalwa Secondary School Kakimanyi, Webuye West constituency were hospitalised after they were struck by lightning.

The students were leaving the school after afternoon classes when the rains started on Tuesday.

They sheltered under trees when lightning struck.

The students were taken to the Webuye District Hospital where 12 were treated and discharged while one girl is still admitted.

Speaking to the star yesterday, principal Jane Mumia said:"The whole incident occurred so fast, we had a good day and the students were leaving for their homes when this happened."

The rains also destroyed houses and crops in parts of Bungoma East subcounty.

In Maraka location, flood waters carried away livestock belonging to a resident.

Speaking to the Star at the hospital, area MCA Balala Majani asked the county government to erect lighting arrestors in all public schools.

He said the area is prone to lighting pointing and many residents have lost their lives.
