Kenya Court Repeals Police Recruitment

Kenya's High Court on Friday (October 31st) nullified the recruitment of 10,000 police officers carried out July 14th and ordered a repeat recruitment exercise, Kenya's The Standard reported.
Judge Isaac Lenaola upheld a complaint brought by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority that the recruitment exercise should begin afresh amid accusations of graft and nepotism.
"I am satisfied that drastic action ought to be taken, painful or unpopular as it may be," he said.
The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) "failed itself, failed Kenyans, failed the recruits and failed the constitution and it must be told", he said.
The appropriate action will void the July 14th recruitment exercise, he said.
The NPSC previously carried out an independent assessment of the exercise, finding that instances of graft had occurred in isolated centres, thereby insulating its leadership from responsibility and restricting the repeat of the exercise to the affected areas.
